WHAT’S IN A NAME?

Like most things in life, the story of our name is not clear cut. The truth is that when Rothko Brand Partners was founded – back in London in the late 1990s – it was named after Mark Rothko, a favourite painter of one of the original founders, Sophia Ledingham. As a creative agency, we loved, of course, the link to a creative master. But that’s not all we liked about his work and who he was.

Just like Rothko Brand Partners, Mark Rothko – is not always easy to pin down – because he was constantly re-inventing himself, to stay ahead of the curve. He was a leader not a follower and he had to make his way as an immigrant in a strange country so he needed plenty of resilience and grit and determination, characteristics we like to think we share with him! 

Born Markus Yakovlevich Rothkowitz on September 25, 1903, Rothko was an American painter of Russian Jewish descent. Although he himself refused to adhere to any art movement, he is generally identified as an abstract expressionist.

We love that he did not allow himself to be boxed or defined by others – he charted his own distinct path in the world. His art, especially that of his later period where he famously worked with rectangular fields of colour and light culminating in his final works for the Rothko Chapel, are original and unique. 

Rothko also lived through some major world events, including World War II, which is what drove a lot of his ongoing transformation. He was responsive to the world. At Rothko Brand Partners we have also been responsive to the changing needs of our clients. We have re-invented ourselves to make sure we continue to add value.  

While we started out life as an agency specialising in the design and writing of internal staff communications – we are now a full service agency spanning both digital and traditional spaces. 

In the end, we know that like Mark Rothko whose work has stood the test of time, that we are not in this business for the short-term gain or glory. For us, sustainability is key. We want our work to create value for our clients and to stand the test of time. We are also steadfastly committed to the growth and development of our people to enable us to stay open minded, flexible and responsive as we head into the uncertainty that the world has to offer us today.
